All about Fox. (Fox's Suggested Title)

Sunday night didn't go as happily as planned. At about 8:15 pm, we sent the kids down in the basement to gather some of the things they left down there from the night before. I laid down on the bed with my ice pack to soothe a headache that was ensuing. There was a bang and a scream. I ran to the stairs where I saw all of the kids coming up. Fox was screaming, and all the kids were talking at the same time. I didn't understand what they were saying happened. As Fox reached the top of the stairs, I heard Dylan say something about blood. Fox looked fine from the front but as I turned him around, quite a bit of blood was trickling down from the back of his head. I told Dylan to go get Alan who was outside in the garden, and I pressed the back of Fox's head against my chest to help slow down the bleeding. As Alan came in, I told him to grab a kitchen towel. As soon as he got a look he told everyone to get in the car. We all piled in the car and drove to the E.R. I sat with Fox on my lap in order to continue to keep pressure on the wound site. This is what Fox's head looked like by the time we got there. He had blood soaked all the way to his underwear.

I really hate E.R.'s and knowing the Davis Hospital didn't take our primary insurance, I was hesitant to stay. After Fox said he was at a "zero" on the pain scale, and playing in the kids area for about 30 minutes, we decided to go because he was no longer bleeding. We got him home and gave him a bath so we could see what we were looking at. He did have a good 1.5 cm gash in his head and after bathing him, it was still bleeding so...

I took him back to the E.R. We pumped Fox up the best we could giving him praises and taking bets on how many stitches he would need. (Fox guessed, "10 on each side"). Fox was all dressed up in his cars robe, slippers, pajamas, and even brought along a cars pillow and his blanket. He was set. His enthusiasm and energy was overwhelming, as I was just ready to crash.

All that enthusiam ended about the time the nurse came in to prep him at about 11:30 pm. He was really tired and not in the mood to hold still for the staples that were ordered. The doctor, who didn't have a drop of bedside manner had no patience for this scared little 6 year old and ordered another nurse in to hold him down. He put in 3 staples and said to come back in 7-8 days to remove the staples. The nurse who prepped Fox was a former student of mine. On my way out she handed me the stapler remover and showed me how to use it. Next week we'll see if I'm brave enough to use it, or smart enough to take it to a nurse or physician who will help me. Any volunteers?

Ouch. I am cringing just thinking about taking out staples out of my childs head! Poor Fox, so what happened?

Tell Fox he's part of an exclusive club...the Staples in Your Head Club... just like Jaron. It didn't bother me to watch them put them in, but it was disturbing to watch them take them out. Jaron didn't seemed to mind, however. Several years later when he saw a staple remover at his Grandpa's office, he proudly announced his knowledge of what you do with this: "You take the staples out of your head with it!" Jaron proudly wears his scar even today. Way to go Fox!

Apparently Fox fell backwards off of our couch and hit the back of his head on the wooden dollhouse before landing on the cement! It is now one of our goals this week to clean the basement so it's not such a danger zone. And Amy...you're on.

Poor Fox! He sounds like such a trooper though. Hope he's doing better.

Great pictures, but I'm wondering if your camera was already in your purse when you went to the ER the first time or if thought to grab it while holding your bleeding childs head.

Holly- The first photo is from Alan's iphone, not our digital. The other photos are also from Alan's iphone. So, yes, I thought of my child's well being before I thought of blog posting.

Hey, Fox has an orange shirt! I knew I liked him. Is it his favorite? You didn't throw it out just because it got a little bloody did you?

Orange has always been Fox's favorite color, and yes he was wearing his favorite shirt the day of the accident. Once we got back home I soaked the shirt in oxy-clean and YES! the blood came out. He wore the shirt 2 days later (and many times since).
